1

Import Eligibility Assessment

We first confirm whether your UK vehicle can legally be imported into Australia — checking the 25-year rule, SEVS Register and Personal Import Scheme before you commit or bid at auction.

No eligibility? We tell you upfront — saving you time and money.

2

Government Approvals & Documentation

Vehicle Import Approvals (VIA) through ROVER, UK V5C & export documentation, customs declarations and biosecurity requirements. This is where many imports fail — our experience prevents costly errors.

3

UK Shipping & Logistics

We collect from the seller and load at the nearest major UK port — Southampton, London Gateway, Felixstowe or Liverpool — via shared container or RORO, with realistic timelines and full transparency throughout the ~40-day journey.

4

Australian Customs & Compliance

We manage customs clearance, coordinate inspections, asbestos testing and RAW compliance work to ensure every Australian standard is met. No confusion. No last-minute surprises.

5

Final Delivery To Your Door

Once approved and compliant, your vehicle is released and delivered — ready for registration in your state or territory.

IMPORT PATHWAYS

The Right Scheme,
For Your British Car

Importing from the UK operates under multiple Australian government pathways. Picking the wrong one is the most common — and most expensive — mistake. Here's how we match your British car to the right scheme.

SECTION 36 · RVSR 2019

The 25-Year Rule

Vehicles 25 years or older (measured by build date, not model year) qualify for import under concessional entry. Perfect for Jaguar E-Types, classic Minis, MGs, Triumphs, early Land Rovers and pre-2001 British collectables.

  • VIA processing typically 3–4 weeks
  • Passenger cars (MA), light goods (NA), motorcycles, tricycles
  • No RAWS modification required for non-road or pre-reg use

SEVS REGISTER

Specialist & Enthusiast Vehicle Scheme

For modern British performance, rare, or unique vehicles meeting one of six eligibility criteria — think McLaren, Lotus, Aston Martin & performance saloons. All SEVS imports must be processed by a Registered Automotive Workshop (RAW).

  • Performance: >110 kW/tonne (pre-2020) or >130 kW/tonne (2020+)
  • Rarity: fewer than 3,000 units/year per make
  • Environmental, mobility, RHD-original & campervan criteria

PERSONAL IMPORT SCHEME

For Expats & Returning Residents

Australian citizens, PRs and eligible visa holders relocating from the UK who've owned their vehicle for 12+ months can import it under the Personal Import option — one vehicle per five years.

  • 10% GST applies; duty & LCT may apply by value
  • Continuous 12-month ownership & use overseas required
  • Concessions available on compliance requirements

AVOID COSTLY DELAYS
DON'T LEARN THE HARD WAY

Avoid Costly
Import Mistakes

Many people attempt to import a British car themselves — and regret it. The most expensive part of importing from the UK is usually the part you didn't know about.

  • Cars that miss the 25-year cut-off by months
  • Unexpected compliance & asbestos costs
  • Long delays at port & quarantine
  • Incorrect or missing UK V5C & export paperwork
  • Vehicles stuck in customs limbo

With Dazmac, you get it done right the first time.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to import a car from the UK to Australia?

As a guide, sea freight from UK ports averages around 40 days, and VIA processing typically takes 3–4 weeks (these can overlap). Add compliance and delivery time on arrival. We'll provide a realistic, end-to-end estimate during your quote based on your car, the chosen scheme and the departure port.

Do I need to convert the steering to right-hand drive?

No. The UK drives on the left and British cars are right-hand drive — the same as Australia — so there's no steering conversion required. This makes the UK one of the most straightforward markets to import from.

Are there hidden costs?

No. We provide transparent pricing and explain all potential costs upfront — including UK port handling, freight, marine insurance, customs duty, 10% GST, Luxury Car Tax (if applicable), asbestos testing, compliance work and delivery.

Do you handle everything?

Yes — from UK collection and approvals to shipping, compliance and Australian delivery. We're a licensed Customs & Quarantine broker with bonded depots in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Fremantle.

What about asbestos testing?

Australia has a zero-tolerance asbestos policy, and older British vehicles can carry asbestos in brakes, gaskets and clutches. Testing is mandatory and costs roughly $800–$1,000 if done locally. We can coordinate offshore testing before shipment to save you time and money.

Which UK ports do you ship from?

We consolidate and ship from every major UK port, including Southampton, London Gateway, Felixstowe and Liverpool — via shared container for valuable, modified or low-clearance cars, or RORO for standard road vehicles. We recommend the right method and port per vehicle.
